Lochearnhead log cabins weekend

posted 18 Jan 2012 17:32 by Liz Sandland   [ updated 11 Feb 2012 05:41 ]

January’s Lochearnhead log cabin weekend was excellent. Weather was cold but kind. The company was first class and the craic great.  Most people went out walking on the Saturday and quite a few headed along the old railway track to the Kings House hotel in Balquhidder for lunch. Marjorie ventured onto two wheels without an engine for the first time in 15 years. Jim dropped us at the top of Glen Ogle and much to the amusement of the two Toms Marjorie wobbled her way back down to Lochearnhead and then sailed on to Balquhidder absolutely brilliant. 30 people sat down to excellent dinners cooked by Marjorie and Jim on Friday and Saturday night. Steve did a great job cooking the breakfasts on both days.

A big thank you to Tom and others who brought along made up rolls for Friday and Saturday lunch. Thanks to Dave’s wife Kim and his mother-in-law for the meat pie and baked ham. Thanks to everyone for pitching in with the cooking, serving, washing up etc.  Every time I saw Ian he was emptying the rubbish bin – thanks Ian. Many thanks must also go to the guys who gave up their normal cabins, with only minor grumps, so that the 6 couples attending could have a small cabin each.

This was my first full Lochearnhead weekend and to be truthful I was not looking forward to the “spartan” accommodation but I have to say that the log cabin was perfectly acceptable I was not cold, my bunk was comfortable and the toilet and shower block was warm and clean. I had a really enjoyable weekend with a great bunch of people in a superb part of the country and sorry folks you will have to put up with me again at the May weekend. Look forward to seeing you all there if I don’t see you before.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM YOUR SOCIAL SECRETARY

posted 29 Dec 2011 06:42 by Liz Sandland   [ updated 29 Dec 2011 06:44 ]

Hello everyone may I wish you all a very happy, healthy and biking New Year.

Being a “newbie” to the job I would like to thank the Scottish Committee, Marjorie, Alex, Liz, Bill, Dick and Jim for all the support, help and encouragement they have given me over the past few months. You are a grand bunch of people and a pleasure to work with. Many thanks also to the various members who have sent me material for the section news, photographs and memorabilia for the section history project, your help and support is much appreciated.

Looking back 2011 was an excellent year for the section with good events and lunch meets enjoyed by large numbers of members not only from Scotland but the rest of the U.K. and Ireland as well.

2012 our 30th anniversary year has all the indications of being even better. So far we have 21 firm bookings for the first event of the year Lochearnhead ‘Save your Liver’ weekend. A very large turnout is expected for Mick Reed’s Glenluce in March, followed in April by the National AGM which the Scottish Section is hosting in Moffat. The Glenshee Hotel and camping weekend at the beginning of May is already getting booked up and looks like being another sell out, dare we hope for a repeat of last years wonderful weather ?

I look forward to meeting up with you all at Events, Lunch Meets and Natter nights in 2012.

Best wishes Judy.

Glasgow natter night report

posted 30 Aug 2011 01:36 by Liz Sandland

Due to space constraints, David Blackwood's full report of the July monthly meeting could not appear in full in the Journal. Here is his full report. This sounds like an interesting venue so why not go along sometime?

Another good turnout at the Glasgow natter night in July saw 18 members, most with their partners, gather on a lovely night for the usual chat and banter.  We were joined by two prospective new members. We hope they enjoyed their welcome and choose to join the club and group (one of whom was on a new K1600GT!!).

A short group discussion took place to plan a number of runs, overnights and weekends away before the more usual chit-chat of who’d been to what events and stories of biking holidays to come and trips now passed.

I reckon getting a new bike has gone to Donald Darroch’s head, he’s away planning possibly three runs (either that or he’s making sure he’s busy when the next grandchild is born so that he can avoid the ‘babysitting’ word!!), these are:

A local run that ends with a visit to the new Transport museum in Glasgow, likely to be the 15th or 16th of Oct.

A run out west to Tighnabruaich (try spelling that after a few, erm, ‘sherries’)

He’s also going to resurrect the run he led a couple of years ago to the Borders.

A run for the foodies is planned by Walter, this time he’s stolen an idea to go for an ice cream – all the way to Mull of Galloway.  August was suggested but this is likely to move to September due to the 60th Rally.

Watch this space (and the forum) for dates etc

Walter and Joyce also led a scenic run to Edinburgh the day before the meet, well done them and, a fuller report of that is elsewhere in the Journal.

As there is usually a very good turnout at the monthly meetings of the ladies (7 at the last natter night) they are looking to plan a ladies day out (fun, food n a few drinks no doubt!!), probably in Glasgow.

No dates or details yet but will be announced on the forum and in the Journal beforehand.  The day out is also open to partners of members too who perhaps don’t venture out on the bikes, you’re welcome to come along and meet those that do.

Between November and February a couple of other social nights-out are in the offing – a Comedy night perhaps at Jongeleurs and a ten-pin bowling night, both Glasgow area.

The annual new year dinner (I know, I know its a bit early for that – but it has to be organised).  This is seen by many as a tonic after the Christmas overload and sets us up for the year ahead with thoughts of places to go, people to meet and friends to make.

The social events again are open to partners of members too.

Dates and details of these in future Journals and on the forum.

Finally, a number of us went to the Longest Day Rally and had a very good weekend – while most of Scotland was basking in rain storms we, on the other hand were basking in good company and sunshine, some of us even managed (just) a hill-walk!!  Many thanks to the organisers for a good welcome and a good time.  Try it next year.

Peter Marshall

posted 26 May 2010 02:23 by Liz Sandland   [ updated 26 May 2010 12:02 ]

Long time member Peter Marshall died yesterday after a long illness.

I am sure many people would know Peter from Lochearnhead and his association with the club over the years.

Ron Male has posted an announcement on the Scottish section of the BMW Club Forum.
The family would appreciate Club members attending the funeral to do so on their bikes if possible as a tribute to Peter.

Latest:
The funeral will be held at Dunfermline Crematorium on Tuesday 1st June at 10am.
Elizabeth has asked that any motorcyclists attending meet at her house at 09.30 to follow the cortege.
The address is 93 Meadowfield, Dalgety Bay, KY11 9UU.
